Getting to know your Sushi Chef

Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite food (to which pizza is a close second) is sushi. And if you know that about me you probably know my favorite place to eat it: Sekisui.

I like Sekisui for its tasty food and great atmosphere but most of all the chefs are great! Anyone who knows anything about sushi restaurants knows the best place to sit is at the bar. Only there can you enjoy the chefs, from watching their great skill to exchanging witty banter. The bar is great seating for beginners especially because there is no better guide than the sushi chef. Ask him any questions you have, and always ask "What is good today?"

If you are a regular visitor the chefs might get to know you and you'll find yourself being greated when you walk in with calls of "Irasshai!" A greeting used with customers they know. The best chefs learn your preferences and can come up with something even when you tell them "Omakase" which means "chef's choice". This can be a wonderful way to order at the sushi bar. When chefs know you, you'll often find yourself recieving gifts at the bar of small apetizers or desserts or other things.

On a recent visit my favorite chef, Yama, wanted to test out a new roll on me. I was very honored by this because it meant he trusted my taste for sushi.

Yama-san's wonderful creation

Of course it was awesome. Thanks Yama!

Hey man. You seem to be really interested in Japan. Why is that? Reiko said your gran is Japanese. Is that right? You have a Japanese blog name, you write about sushi and other stuff. Why don`t you set out your reasons? It would make an interesting post. :)

Marjo-
Hello! My name is Christina. You're right in saying that sushi doesn't necessarily contain raw fish--a misconception most people have. I'm not quite sure what you're asking when you say wasabi or kikkoman. Personally, I don't like wasabi. Soy sauce is great stuff though. I'm not 100% Japanese myself, but my grandmother is. When I go to sushi bars with her, I've seen her take a little bit of wasabi and mix it into her soy sauce...wasabi-flavored soy sauce I guess...haha. As far as your search for a sheet, I'd check out some places online...maybe you'll come across something good there.

Ah,okay. I'm Japanese too. An American adoptee here. This question is more to Girlfriend than blogger, lol...

True sushi doens't necessarily contain raw fish- good/no good- lol...
wasabi or kikkoman.
lastly, i'm still looking for a good sheet. there are no decent japanese groceries where I live- love to make the stuff at home. I can get sub par korean sheets.

so where do I look?

Continuing my search...

Sorry for the use of "many references." Gotta learn to watch my wording...

Comment on Max: You gotta love a guy that slices up an entire lemon just for you when you requested a little bit. He gets an A++ in my book.

I noticed many references to the book I gave you. I'm glad it's come in handy.

Tom is a great guy, he served sam and me. Max is...lol...sweetheart is a good term, because he's a little shy, but he's really nice too...

Sad. No reference to the lovely Japanese lady responsible for your love of sushi. Ah well...I'm just your girlfriend.

P.S. I like Tom better, and Max is such a sweetheart. It's hard not to like the guy.
