Helped catch a drunk driver
So yesterday my family and I were leaving Hamilton Place when we saw this car slam on his brakes, but fail to stop and hit a woman driving a minivan that was making a right turn. She had signaled so it wasn't her fault. She completes the turn to pull into the lot, but as soon as she's clear, the car slams on the gas and takes the next right into a hotel area (lots of different hotels).
We keep driving, but in about 250 feet we realize what we just saw, a hit and run. We also realized that there is no reason to drive away so quickly from such a minor accident, other than being intoxicated. My mom and I both caught the first three letters of the runaway driver's license plate and we saw it was red. My dad though he recognized the model as a Hundai Sonota. We decided to head back and let the poor woman know what we knew.
So we went back, and fortunately she was fine, but the car's rear bumber had sustained some real damage. While we were talking to her, (found out she's a prosecuter in Jasper, TN) another man came to help out. He had seen what happened and was in a position to follow the runaway, but he couldn't catch up with him and lost him. However, he did notice that the plates were Pennsylvania plates. Between that and the first three numbers and the color and model, we thought we might have a chance of finding who it was.
She called the cops and not less than a minute later, one goes zooming by down the road the runaway had taken. About 5 minutes later, a cop comes to our location to make sure everything is okay and get all the details and all the cop stuff that a cop does at the scene of an accident. We asked if they found the guy and he said "Yeah, at the Microtel." We asked if he was intoxicated and he responded with an emphatic "Oh yeah." Surprise, surpise.
Anyway, it was a very interesting event. We were both surprised and delighted that they had the guy. Good job Chattanooga Police.
